Love the Snow
I didn’t grow up with snow, but now that I live in a mountain town, I don’t know that I want to live anywhere without snow in the winter. Snow is one of my very favorite weather conditions - but also, one of my very favorite to photograph. There are are fewer distractions. It’s easier to lean toward minimalism. There are fewer colors to include or exclude. Subjects stand out easily. Snow covered trees offer repeated patterns. Snow covered mountains are majestic. I can remember drawing them with crayons in daycare as a child. If you’ve spent any time in the snow, you know that frequently, there’s a different kind of quiet in the snow - the velvety texture has an incredible amount of surface area, scattering and deadening sound. Photographs of places covered in snow make me feel quiet, a feeling many of us seek in a hectic modern life.
I went for a drive yesterday morning in search of snow in the mountains. For whatever reason, though most likely familiarity, I tend to leave my house heading east or south when I’m on the way to take photos. Yesterday, I intentionally went west into the Aldrich Range. I can see the peaks from my living room window but have spent relatively little time in them. I was hoping mostly to put the drone up as close as I could get to the summit in order to capture a few scenes of the mountains. To my surprise, I was able to make it to the top of the pass. As mentioned, when I got out of the car, it was quiet. Though the peaks were shrouded in clouds, I put the drone in the air to explore the scene from above. Though I didn’t capture what I came for, I wasn’t disappointed at all.
Hope you enjoy these as well.
Winter is a season I hope to explore deeper in the next few months. I’ve - happily - got no choice in the matter anyway.
Until next time,
